Bough & Burrow started after years of creative hobbies and work — photography, web design and development, tinkering with wood — and the realisation that making things, beautiful things that serve a purpose and also keep things out of landfill, and the smell and feel of wood makes me happy.
I'm Dave, and I make everything from my garden workshop in Wotton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire.
How I Work
I take bits of wood that most people would throw on the fire or into a skip and turn them into useful things — objects that create ambiance or make a home feel more like one. A lot of the wood comes from 100 Acer Conservation Project in Tyley Bottom, where we have laid hazel hedgerows and have coppice that we manage yearly. I'm often offered interesting pieces by people who know what I do, which means I've accumulated a rather large collection — from small sticks and interesting branches to oak boards and tree stumps. Much to my partner's dismay.
I like to make features of flaws. I don’t hide repairs, imperfections and scars — they're part of the journey the material has made, sometimes over decades, to get from woodland to salvage to my workbench and into the homes and hands of my customers. The provenance of what I work with matters to me, and I hope it matters to the people drawn to the work too.
Sustainability Matters
The wood I use is coppiced, foraged, reclaimed, or saved from landfill and I finish everything with natural oils and beeswax — nothing synthetic. I’ve never been to a timber yard to buy wood for Bough & Burrow projects although I sometimes buy in shanks for walking sticks but they’re from known sources where I know they use sustainable practices and support healthy woodlands. 2% of every order placed through the website goes to carbon offsetting.*
Retail, Markets & Custom Work
You'll find my work in Crafters Shop in Wotton-under-Edge and throughout the year at local markets around Gloucestershire, or you can order online here on the website. I also take commissions for custom pieces—get in touch if you've got something specific in mind.
